Eid at Weequahic Park

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a strict fast and participate in pious activities such as charitable giving and peace-making. It is a time of intense spiritual renewal for those who observe it. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world observe a joyous three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking). On Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - there will be Eid-ul-Fitr Prayer and Celebration starting at 8am for the Salat (prayer) and Khutbah (Lecture) by Imam Qasim Ahmed at Weequahic Park.

For over 30 years the Unified Eid Committee of New Jersey (UEC-NJ) and the Council of Imams in New Jersey (COINJ), representing about 25 area masjids and community action organizations, has hosted two annual Eid Celebrations in Newark. These celebrations or (Eid meaning "Recurring Happiness") called Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha consist of a prayer, lecture, and a feast/ celebration. Holiday cards and gifts are exchanged among family and friends, plus children are often the recipients of additional gifts making these days extra special.

During the warm months Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha Celebrations are hosted in Weequahic Park and is attended by thousands of believers not just from the Greater Newark Area but from throughout NJ and the Tri-State Area. It is important to note that combined the UEC-NJ and the COINJ represent the largest group of African-American Muslims in the State of New Jersey, and our priority is to help this large family demographic fulfill their Islamic obligations.

Typically, political leaders from the local level (Newark, Irvington, East Orange), the County level and the state level including the Former Governor Jon Corzine has attended our prayer event. Business leaders and entrepreneurs also find this venue an excellent venue to reach a very large audience, vendors spaces are available contact Rahjan Nassiruddin at 862-596-0353.

Donations are needed to help cover the food for the feast, and your contribution is tax deductible. For more information contact Tariq at coachraheem@gmail.com.
