The Newark Saint Patrick’s Day Parade celebrates its 82nd Year in 2017.

The Parade will be preceded by a Memorial Mass for Deceased Members and the Investiture of the Grand Marshal and Deputy Grand Marshal at St. Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral at 9:15 am celebrated by His Eminence Joseph William Cardinal Tobin.

The Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Color Corps and Newark Firefighters Pipe Band will lead the Mass procession.

Breakfast will follow at 10:30 am at Mercato Tomato Pie – 212 Market Street.  Buses and shuttles will transport from the Pro-Cathedral to the restaurant.

Reviewing Stand Ceremonies will be at 12:00 pm at Four Gateway Center – 100 Mulberry Street.

The Parade will be taped and rebroadcast by Verizon FiOS1.

  • The Grand Marshal is Rev. Edwin D. Leahy, O.S.B. – The 23rd Headmaster of St. Benedict's Prep.  In 1966, he took his first vows as a monk of the Benedictine Abbey of Newark and was ordained in 1972.  In 1973, the school reopened under his leadership and now serves 550 young men, most from African and Hispanic backgrounds, has 58 faculty members, and boasts nearly 6,000 alumni.
  • The Deputy Grand Marshal is Elizabeth “Betty” Sheehan Teevan – Attended Sacred Heart School, Blessed Sacrament, and Saint Vincent Academy.  She graduated with honors from Latin American College of Languages and Business.  Her father-in-law, John P. Teevan, was Grand Marshal of the 1967 Saint Patrick's Day Parade and the proprietor of The Clipper Ship Restaurant on Roseville Avenue.
  • The Parade will be Dedicated to Robert H. and †Marguerite Quinn Largey – Longtime supporters of the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Bob and Marguerite Largey have also been members of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, the John F. Cryan Association, the Giblin Association, the Nugent Association, the Jerry Lynch Social Club, and the Irish American Society of the Oranges, among others.

 

The Parade Route is:
From the Prudential Center along Mulberry Street, past Four Gateway Center, NJPAC, Military Park, across Broad Street, up Central Avenue to St. Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral and ending in front of the Newark Museum and Washington Park.

The 5th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day High School Band Competition –
Sponsored by NJ.com - Star-Ledger and adjudicated by USBands, the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will feature a high school band competition among New Jersey’s top high school bands.  Participants will be judged in the Order of March on the bases of Music, Visual, and Overall Effect.

Parade Beneficiaries –
The Parade will feature contingents representing the 2017 Grand Marshal’s and Deputy Grand Marshal’s charitable-beneficiaries.  Beneficiaries will include the National Guard State Family Readiness Council, St. John’s Soup Kitchen, St. Benedict’s Prep, Saint Vincent Academy, Benedictine Academy, and more.

Irish History Breakfast – A breakfast and presentation on Irish history will be given for students of the Archdiocese of Newark at the Newark Public Library at 10:30 am on Parade Day.  Sponsored by Investors Bank, the presenter will be Guy Sterling who will discuss “The Irish of Newark: Notable Irish Residents from 1666 – Present.”

7th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Art and Essay Contests – The Parade Committee is sponsoring its seventh annual Saint Patrick’s Day Art Contest for elementary school students and Saint Patrick’s Day Essay Contest for high school students of the schools of the Archdiocese of Newark.  Each participating school may designate up to three winners who will be recognized in the Order of March on Parade Day.  The three Archdiocesan winners of the art contest will each earn a $250.00 donation for their respective schools while the three essay contest winners will be awarded scholarship prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250, respectively.
